Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this charger compatible with AGM or maintenance-free batteries in the W45ZHD?
A: The HY 4654992 charger is designed for standard flooded lead-acid batteries (the typical battery type shipped with W45ZHD). It may function with sealed AGM batteries, but it does not have a special AGM charging algorithm. Using it on an AGM battery will charge the battery, but potentially not to 100% optimal capacity and it could shorten AGM lifespan slightly if the voltage profile isn’t ideal. If your W45ZHD has an AGM or gel battery pack, check if Hyster specifies a different charger model for those batteries.
Q: What frequency should I equalize cycles?
A: For daily use, perform a full equalization once per week. That restores balance among cells and prevents stratification that limits capacity.
Q: Will this charger automatically shut off when the Hyster pallet jack’s battery is full?
A: Yes, this is an automatic charger. It will taper down the current as the battery approaches full charge and then stop charging once the battery is fully charged.
Q: How long does it take to charge the Hyster W45ZHD’s battery using this 20A charger?
A: The charging time will depend on the battery’s capacity and how depleted it is. The W45ZHD typically uses a 24V industrial battery, often in the range of 170–200 Ah. From a roughly 80% discharged state, the 20A charger will take approximately 8 hours to bring the battery back to full charge (an overnight charge). If the battery was only partially used during the day, recharge could be completed in just a few hours. It’s designed so that the next shift can recharge a full work shift’s use. Keep in mind that very cold conditions or an older battery can slightly increase charging time.
Q: Can I replace the original charger with this unit myself? Is any calibration needed?
A: Replacing the charger is generally straightforward and does not require special programming or calibration. It’s usually a matter of unplugging the old charger’s connections (the AC cord and the DC wires to the battery or connector) and mounting the new one in its place, then reconnecting the wires.
The charger is pre-set with the correct charging profile for the W45ZHD’s battery system, so you don’t need to adjust settings.
Q: My pallet jack battery is very low – will this charger be able to start charging it?
A: Generally, yes, as long as the battery isn’t completely dead or damaged. The charger will sense the battery’s voltage when connected. If the battery is extremely discharged (for example, below ~18 volts for a 24V system), the charger might not engage for safety reasons (it might interpret a very low voltage as no battery or a faulty battery). In cases of an over-discharged battery, you may need to bring the voltage up a bit first. This can be achieved by briefly charging each 12V section of the battery using a portable charger, or by connecting a charged battery in parallel for a short period. Once the battery reaches the minimum threshold, the Hyster charger should activate and charge normally. If the battery is simply old and won’t hold any charge, then even this charger won’t be able to revive it – you’d need a new battery.
Q: Does this charger have any indicators to show charging progress or errors?
A: Yes, it includes an LED indicator panel on the unit.
